harry potter and the chamber of secrets
How do you follow up a film which is not only based on one of the best-selling books of all time, but also comes in the wake of one of the top-grossing movies of all time? The answer, according to Harry Potter producer/director Chris Columbus, who returns to Hogwarts for the second and, for him, final time, lies within Harry himself.
ALMOST A YEAR HAS PASSED SINCE THE FIRST HARRY POTTER FILM ENTHRALLED AUDIENCES AROUND THE WORLD. ON THE HEELS OF ITS STAR-STUDDED LONDON PREMIERE

“Chamber of Secrets is darker and funnier and it takes Harry’s character to a new place,” says Columbus. “The first film was about Harry realising that he’s actually a wizard. In contrast to the colourful and larger-than-life characters that surrounded him, Harry was somewhat passive and didn’t come into his own until the third act of the film. In Chamber of Secrets, he exudes a lot more confidence and strength right from the start.”
The Harry Potter team reassembled a mere three days after the November 19, 2001 premiere of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone (Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone in the US) to begin production on the second film in the series. “None of us had the chance to sit back and think about the success of the first film, which I think was good for everyone, particularly the kids,” says the director, who is also executive producer of both films (and plans to produce the third outing, which will be directed by Alfonso Cuaron). “By that point, the cast and crew had become like one big family. It was great that we could all share that sense of excitement without losing our momentum and carry it into Chamber of Secrets.”
