THE TROUBLE
WITH JEWEL

Liv Tyler, who plays Jewel

one night at mccool's

One Night at McCool’s tells the story of Jewel (Liv Tyler), a beautiful drifter with whom three very different guys become obsessed. The first is a barman called Randy (Matt Dillon), who can’t believe his luck and sets up house with her. Then there’s Randy’s lawyer cousin, Carl (Paul Reiser), who sees her as the perfect partner for some energetic sexual encounters. And the third is a cop called Dehling (John Goodman), for whom Jewel represents everything that is pure in the world - everything, in fact, that has gone missing from his own life.

Each of the three sees Jewel as something totally different, projecting his own requirements onto an apparently complaisant young woman. And each is the hero of his own story, with the other two spoiling what he believes to be a potentially perfect relationship. But Jewel is very much her own woman, and doesn’t think twice about removing obstacles in her path, permanently if necessary. She’s not exactly a bad girl, but men tend to make her that way.

But what does Jewel really want? Well, for starters, she dreams of a pale blue living room with plush carpeting, a white couch and a little fountain in the corner, like she saw once in a magazine.

Finally a fourth man becomes involved: Mr Burmeister (Michael Douglas), a bingo-playing hit man who may or may not fall under Jewel’s spell. Randy hires him to sort out the mess. But by the time Mr Burmeister arrives on the scene, the mess is pretty much out of control.

One Night at McCool’s represents the feature debut of top commercials director Harald Zwart, a Norwegian who was born in Holland and who trained for four years at the Netherlands Film Academy. He has worked in Norway, London and Los Angeles, and among his best-known commercials is that one for Lynx deodorant, where a guy who uses it is trailed by (literally) every girl in town…
