BLUE CRUSH

HOT TUB: Bosworth with Matthew Davis, who plays her boyfriend, Matt.

AND WHO WAS CAST IN THE LEAD ROLES?

Grazer: Kate Bosworth plays the main character. She was in movies like Remember the Titans and she hadn’t surfed before but she was a trained equestrian - something she used in previous roles - and you could just see that she had the mental and physical wherewithal to surf.
Stockwell: She came in and did an amazing reading and we took her out for surf auditions in Malibu and she was just fearless. Basically, she ended up with a month to get as good at surfing as she could before we started shooting, and she just blew everyone away. There were a lot of people who were initially very sceptical that we’d ever get these non-surfers to paddle out into these terrifying waves, but Kate did. There were some days where she got tossed about and hammered by the waves and would come out saying, ‘There’s a lot of power out there!’ I think she developed a healthy respect for the waves but she never seemed intimidated. She’s really an incredible actress too.

HOW ABOUT YOUR OTHER CAST MEMBERS?

Grazer:Matthew Davis, who was in Legally Blonde, is playing Kate’s boyfriend who, unlike the usual football-player character looking for a submissive girl, is a guy who actually supports her spirit and drive. And then there’s Michelle Rodriguez, who was in Girlfight and The Fast and The Furious.
Stockwell: Michelle is great. She is such a distinctive, odd, unique personality: when she walks in the room, you are drawn to her, fascinated by her. She really fleshed out the character she played. She just amazed me.”

HAS ANYONE IN THE SURF COMMUNITY SEEN THE MOVIE YET?

Stockwell: No one has seen it yet because we only just finished shooting. We shot from November until March, which is the big wave season in Hawaii, and we’re still editing. So I’ll be interested to see what people say. I think it will be a fun ride. I think it will take people places and let you see and experience things you haven’t seen before.
Grazer: I think it will be visually exciting, and I love movies like that. I made the movie Backdraft, which is about firemen, and what was so great about that was that there were times in that movie where the actors weren’t talking, but as audience members we were being taken into a world that we’d never go into otherwise. Apollo 13 took us into space. In Blue Crush, you’re entering another dimension, which is water instead of space, and it’s amazing.

HOW WOULD YOU SUM UP THE EXPERIENCE OF MAKING THE FILM. ANYTHING YOU LEARNED?

Grazer: Surfing is exciting, but I knew that already. But I hadn’t realised how popular it is all over the world. Surfing is enormous in Japan, it’s a big deal in France, in Ireland… all over the planet, even in places where the water is freezing cold, which is shocking to me.
Stockwell: I learned that the weather changes in Hawaii about every five minutes. I also learned that women bring an amazing style and grace to the sport of surfing. And I learned that I’d rather surf next to a girl then a guy any day!
