Hogwarts and Upwards ’Tis the season of the books (Part I): Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint and Emma Watson in the highly anticipated movie version of JK Rowlings worldwide bestseller, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, which hits screens in the UK and the US on November 17; in Germany the following week; in Australia a week later; and in France on December 6. Chris Columbus directs a star-studded cast, with newcomer Radcliffe in the title role.

Let Battle Commence ’Tis the season of the books (Part 2): the Peter Jackson-directed first part of JRR Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings trilogy, Fellowship of the Ring, which opens almost everywhere in the week before Christmas (and in Australia just after). With Kinowelt losing the German-speaking rights to the New Line film, Warners now have both of the potentially biggest blockbusters of this holiday season for large chunks of the world.
