Everyone, it seems, had their reasons for wanting to do the film. For veteran Aussie cinematographer Ian Baker, it was “a great opportunity to do a terrific looking picture”. For star Toni Collette, it was a chance to present cinemagoers with a story that was “very beautiful and real and subtle and kind of uncomfortable: it’s quite rare for an audience to have the chance to experience those emotions.” And for director Sue Brooks, it was about taking things seriously. “As an Australian, that’s very hard,” she says, “because it’s not a characteristic that we’re renowned for, nor is it something that we’re comfortable with.
