DAY OF THE DEMENTORS

harry potter and
the prisoner of askaban

HARRY MEETS THE MOST DANGEROUS CREATURES YET IN HARRY POTTER AND THE PRISONER OF AZKABAN: THE TERRIFYING DEMENTORS. OPPOSITE, DIRECTOR ALFONSO CUARÓN TALKS ABOUT TAKING UP THE BATON FROM CHRIS COLUMBUS, WHO DIRECTED THE FIRST TWO FILMS (COLUMBUS PRODUCES THIS ONE). AND WE INTRODUCE THE LATEST EPISODE AND SURVEY THE CAST OF CHARACTERS, BOTH OLD FRIENDS AND NEW ARRIVALS.

How did you first become involved in Harry Potter?
When David Heyman sent me the script, I was very ignorant of the whole Harry Potter universe as I had been completely immersed in a previous movie and hadn’t seen the movies or read the books. But when I read the script, I immediately wanted to read the book: I was just that captured by the material. You immediately want to become part of it.

Did you have any awareness of the books at all?
Of course, it is impossible not to have heard of Harry Potter, but I was just not familiar with the books or films. Harry Potter brought me to this universe and it was a very beautiful one to land in.

What were your first impressions?
I enjoyed the storytelling aspects of the books. As with all great storytelling, it is very layered and you can have different interpretations of the material. I like what JK Rowling did, in that it was a very grounded universe, not only emotionally but also socially. It’s magical but it’s also a real place. There is a social context of the modern world as we know it.
