Michael Gambon as Dumbledore

Gary Oldman as escapee Sirius Black

An inflated Aunt Marge (Pam Ferris) takes flight
In the magic world, Michael Gambon takes over the role of Hogwarts’ headmaster, Albus Dumbledore, from Richard Harris who died shortly after completing Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.

But the remainder of the Hogwarts faculty remains pretty much the same: Dame Maggie Smith is Professor McGonagall, the school’s deputy head; Alan Rickman is Severus Snape, head of Slytherin and Professor of Potions; and Robbie Coltrane returns as Rubeus Hagrid, although the friendly giant has now been promoted from Keeper of the Keys to Care of Magical Creatures teacher. Still holding court in the Lucky Cauldron, meanwhile, is Robert Hardy as Minister of Magic Cornelius Fudge.

Newcomers to the third episode include Gary Oldman as the titular escapee, Sirius Black, who may have been responsible for the death of Harry’s parents (by leading Voldemort to them), and now seems to be looking to find their son and finish the job.

Then there is David Thewlis as the mysterious new Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher, Professor Lupin, who teaches Harry how to defend himself from the Dementors, but who may also have some sinister link to Sirius Black.

Timothy Spall joins the team as Peter Pettigrew, along with Julie Christie as pub landlady Madam Rosmerta, while popular British comedians Jennifer Saunders and Paul Whitehouse pop up in a couple of Hogwarts’ famous talking paintings.
