These nominated films will now be submitted for consideration by the 500-strong voting membership of the European Film Academy. The winner is announced at the 1999 European Film Awards ceremony on Saturday 4 December. This will take place at the 1000-seat Schiller Theatre in Berlin, the home of the European Film Academy, where ticket sales are already over-subscribed.

The Awards Ceremony will be broadcast throughout 21 European territories both live, on the night and on 5 December. FilmFour will broadcast the Award Ceremony as part of its European Film Weekend on Sunday 5 December at 10.00 p.m. It will also be shown to an audience in North America via the Sundance Channel, on both 4&5 December, with repeats planned in the following week.

The Chairman of the European Film Academy, Nik Powell said, "These nominations have been selected from a large and extremely impressive array of European films produced just this year. To have so many excellent films from which to reach the final nominations reflects the extent to which local language European films are increasingly popular, outside of their own national borders and with commercial audiences. One has only to witness the success of the winner of the 1998 European Film, Roberto Benigni's La Vita e Bella. It is the intention of the European Film Awards to continue the promotion of such pictures, and hope that our 1999 winner enjoys similar success."
