Pic of the Month: September

WHERE’S THAT GIRL? In a month with very few major openings, pride of place goes to a film with a few question marks hanging over it. Glitter (US, September 21) marks the acting debut of singer Mariah Carey who bowed out of public life claiming exhaustion on July 25. This meant that she did PR neither for the movie nor for the accompanying soundtrack album. At worst, the former’s opening should score high on the curiosity chart.

OUTER SPACEY Iain Softley is the latest in a long line of Brit directors to get prestigious Hollywood vehicles. K-Pax (US, October 5) is the story of a guy (Kevin Spacey) who arrives at Grand Central Station announcing he’s from another planet. Unsurprisingly, he is sent to a mental hospital, where he is treated by a sympathetic psychiatrist (Jeff Bridges). With two of America’s best movie actors and the producer of Field of Dreams, this could loosen the hold of sequels on the North American box office.
