Released in the summer of 2002, Scooby-Doo clicked with audiences around the world, even with those who had not grown up watching the cartoon series on television. A sequel was inevitable, but making it presented producer Charles Roven, writer James Gunn and director Raja Gosnell with something of a dilemma.
Where the first film had been able simply to present the characters - with the added bonus of allowing fans of the TV series to enjoy Matthew Lillard’s alarmingly accurate Shaggy - the new film had to work for an audience that was already used to the idea of seeing the members of Mystery Inc in the flesh plus a three-dimensional Scooby who walked and talked (well, sort of).
For any reader who has never heard of Mystery Inc, all you really need to know is that Shaggy, Scooby, Fred (Freddie Prinze Jr), Daphne (Sarah Michelle Gellar) and Velma (Linda Cardellini) make up the detective agency. That Shaggy and Scooby are perpetually scared and hungry, Fred is very macho, Daphne is perfect in every way and Velma is extremely brainy but a bit of a nerd.
They investigate and solve mysteries usually involving an assortment of monsters who actually turn out to be human villains using all kinds of clever tricks, and their vehicle is a van called the Mystery Machine. Come to think of it, any reader who did not already know at least some of this has got to be kidding. So, anyway, a second Scooby movie had to be made. With monsters in it, of course.
