It’s the perfect urban legend,” says Teddy Zee, who works with Will Smith and his producing partner James Lassiter on Smith’s new comedy, Hitch. “It’s about a guy who is very charismatic and confident around women, so much so that he is able to teach other men how to approach the women they’ve fallen for. In Hitch’s philosophy, it only takes three dates to illuminate the right you and appeal to the woman of your dreams.”
Hitch (the name by which Smith’s character, Alex Hitchens, is known) is a ‘date doctor’ who claims he can make any girl fall in love with any man, provided the man in question does what Hitch tells him (and provided he pays Hitch’s not inconsiderable fee). “We’d been searching for the right project for Will for years,” adds Lassiter. “It’s not as easy at it looks. There aren’t many comedies out there, and even fewer that are any good.”
The idea for the story came to first-time screenwriter Kevin Bisch when he found himself thinking back over his college years and remembering all the first dates which had seemed to take forever to get going. Time after time, Bisch recalls, he would be sitting in some girl’s dorm room, leafing through a book of pictures or a photo album. Then it dawned on him.
“How could I be so dense?” he wonders now. “They were just killing time waiting for me to kiss them. After that, I became obsessed with the minutiae of dating.”
