Director Lasse Hallström didn’t have to think twice about where to shoot his latest film, Casanova, a comedy about what happens when the world’s greatest lover falls in love with the wrong woman. The first choice was Venice; the second choice was Venice… the only choice was Venice.

“I go wherever the script takes me and then I try to get deeply into the life of that place,” says Hallström, who shot The Cider House Rules in New England; The Shipping News in Newfoundland; and Chocolate in rural France. “The best way of getting to know Venice was to experience it in person.
