THE DRAGON, THE LAKE, AND THE MAZE

Professor Dumbledore (Michael Gambon) announces the Triwizard Tournament.

BACK IN ITS WINTER HOLIDAY SEASON SLOT, THE FOURTH OF THE HARRY POTTER FILMS BRINGS THREE TIMES THE DANGERS AND THREE TIMES THE THRILLS AS HARRY FACES UP TO THE TRIWIZARD TOURNAMENT, NOT TO MENTION HIS FIRST REAL DATE WITH A MEMBER OF THE OPPOSITE SEX. ELEANOR SINGER TOASTS HARRY POTTER AND THE GOBLET OF FIRE.

This Christmas will bring trying times for Harry Potter - played, as ever, by Daniel Radcliffe. For one thing, he’s getting older. What’s more, the tests are getting tougher; and there’s the all-important Hogwarts Yule Ball to get ready for. Last but not least, where each of the three previous outings brought with it one supreme test of the apprentice wizard’s skills and courage, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire brings three, as Harry finds himself taking part in the exciting and extremely dangerous Triwizard Tournament.

“This is one of the most challenging of all the films,” says David Heyman, who produced the previous three as well. “We needed someone who could direct a dark and suspenseful thriller, drive exhilarating action sequences and yet, at the same time, be intuitive and sensitive to the comic angst of being a teenager. You’ve only got to look at films as diverse as Dance With a Stranger, Donnie Brasco and Four Weddings and a Funeral to appreciate that there are very few directors as skilled and multi-talented as Mike Newell.”

“For me,” says Newell, “the essence of this story is a thriller. There are wonderful set pieces, from the excitement of the Triwizard Tournament to the humour and heartbreak of the Yule Ball. But driving it is this marvellous thriller in which something truly evil is out to get Harry – and only he has the power to do anything about it.”
